”Well you can tell them that my designs are worth more than double what their offering and when their ready to do REAL business to give me a call.” madalenia hung up without announcing her departure from the call she was having with her assistant Rachel. Rachel had to have been used to it by now though, she was working for a pretty tough woman. Madalenia rubbed her temples as she walked down the long staircase that led from the top floor of her house to the bottom. She had her black coach purse hanging off of one arm and with the other free hand she was holding her iPhone. She was looking rather stylish today, but then again, she always looked her best. It sort of came with the job description. As she reached the end of the marble stairs, her black heels making a soft clink like noise as she stepped down, she could hear Madelyn, her 3 year old yapping it up in the family room. Madalenia went straight for the door, hoping to remain unnoticed, but right when she touched the door knob her daughter came skipping towards her, ’Mommmmmyyy, look what I drawed!’, she giggled showing her mother a little drawing she did of god knows what. All Madalenia saw were scribbles of different colors all over the white paper, ”Good job sweetie… but mommy has to go. And for god sakes…”, she took a step closer to her 3 year old and leaned down straightening her shirt a bit. ”Lupita! I told you to iron her clothes before she puts them on… is that really so hard to remember?” she said standing up looking at Lupita, the new nanny/maid. Since the move, they had to make a few changes, and adjust to other things, but things seemed to be going fine as far as she knew. Madalenia rolled her eyes and slid her sunglasses down from the top of her head, ”I’ll be back around four…” she stated before making her exit.
Her chauffeur opened the car door for her as she approached the vehicle, yes, the woman could drive, but she wasn’t going to if she didn’t have to. She sat in the backseat as her chauffeur took the driver’s seat starting up the car, ’Where to Miss Murphy?’ he asked politely. ”Serendipity”, she said instantly and placing her purse beside her. She looked through her phone and called her eldest daughter Anna, no answer as usual. Madalenia wanted to speak to her right now, after all, the family had moved to this town in order to be in her life more. ”Annabel, call your mother. I’m tired of speaking to your voicemail…” she said annoyed and hung up, placing her cell into her bag. They were there within minutes, Madalenia really needed a spa day to herself. She exited the car and made her way to the front counter, ”Hi, Murphy checking in. I have an appointment”, she said very business-like, the lady at the counter replied with joy and led her inside. She was more than friendly which Madalenia definitely appreciated, she liked being treated with class and happiness.
Twenty minutes later, Madalenia was lying on a massage table face down with a towel covering her buttocks. There was two other massage tables, one on each side of her, but they were empty for now. The masseuse had magical hands; she really released a lot of the tension in her client’s shoulders and neck. Madalenia had a very stressful job so her trips to the spa were countless; it always made everything much better. And afterwards when she got home, she could just spend some quiet time with her husband all relaxed. She hated snapping at him when she had a stressful day at work, she always felt incredibly bad afterwards. So this trip to the spa was both for her and him. When her massage was done she slowly sat up putting her white robe on, ”Thank you so much, that was magnificent”, she said softly as she stood up tieing the knot to keep her robe closes. She stood up and walked towards another room, seeing what else she could do whilst she stayed there.

Today was the first day that Anna has had off of work in the longest time. She couldn’t remember the last time that she could wake up, and know that she didn’t have to go anywhere. She wouldn’t have to wear her scrubs; she could spend her day as she pleased. That fact alone had a smile dawning on her face to last the entire day. As long as someone didn’t come by and ruin her mood, Anna would be set. The question was; what could she do with this blessed time off? Benny was working. She could go shopping… It was always an option. But she was feeling lazy. So Anna didn’t even bother rolling out of bed when she woke up around noon, instead reached over to grab the slim black remote for the TV that hung on her wall, clicking it on. Seeing that V for Vendetta was playing, she turned to the channel and became immersed. With a contented sigh, she sat up, fluffed her pillows, and fell back into them. Anna tugged her white duvet up to her neck, and then crossed her arms on top of it. Her eyes glued to the screen, and she zoned out, only focusing on the movie.
An hour later, the ending credits were rolling and Anna shut the TV off. Flinging the duvet off of her, she swung her legs over the edge of her queen bed. She made her way for the living room, grabbing her cell phone off of her dresser on the way. Dialing the all-too familiar number of Serendipity Spa and Salon, she was connected with the receptionist. Asking to see if her favorite nail technician, Stacey, was free for a last minute manicure and pedicure appointment, she was pleasantly surprised that she had an opening in a half hour. Disconnecting the call, she grabbed a water bottle out of her fridge and went back into her room with her iPhone in hand. Grabbing a hair tie off of her end table, she pulled her hair up before pulling a sundress out of her closet. It had spaghetti straps and a v cut, the material soft and easy to move in. The dress was a soft crème in color, almost the same warming shade as the foam in a cappuccino. At the bottom, it had elegant, floral, flowing designs in a dark brown, almost black, growing up towards the belt that tied below her breasts that was the same color. Slipping it on over her head, Anna was running out of time. It took about ten minutes for her to get to the salon - and the appointment was in fifteen.
Mumbling curses under her breath, she grabbed a pair of heels to match the stitching on the dress, a necklace that Benny had gotten her and her favorite diamond studs before she was out the door. The only things in her possession were her phone, car keys, and wallet. Throwing the door of her car open, she slid into the seat with ease, and in a second swift motion, her car was started. Buckling in, she pulled out of her driveway and she was on her way. Turning the radio on, Anna didn’t bother connecting her phone to the car. It was only ten minutes; she could live with radio music until then. Finding her favorite station, an unfamiliar song came pounding through the speakers. At this moment, her phone began ringing, blaring out the chorus of Summer Girlby Stereos. Looking at the caller ID, she saw it was only Mommy Dearest, and rolled her eyes involuntarily. Placing it back in the cup holder, Anna didn’t want to talk to her right now. A conversation with her mother normally only ended in disaster, and she was happy at this moment. Her ring kept going, and she turned the knob for the speakers in retaliation. Thankfully, the ringing stopped soon enough, and she could now return the volume of her speakers back to a normal level.
Now at the salon, she let the receptionist know that she was here, and followed her to where Stacey was waiting for her. After she selected the color she wanted, Anna laid back, and enjoyed being pampered. Small talk continued, a few laughs were shared, and then her nails were dried and perfected in twenty minutes. Anna stood and turned back to Stacey. ”Thank you, dear. I’m sure I’ll be seeing you soon enough,” she said in adieu, grinning at her with a slight wave of her hand. She paid at the reception desk, and made small talk with the woman, knowing that she had all the time in the world today, as Benny wouldn’t be out of work for about six more hours and she didn’t have any other plans. Her eyes briefly scanned the area, and much to her dismay, Anna saw her mother (of all people) exiting one of the massage rooms. Attempting to hide her face, she placed her elbow on the counter, quickly placing her forefinger to her temple and her thumb to her chin, leaving her fingers spanned out. She wasn’t sure how effective she was, but Anna was definitely cursing the need that she had felt to wait around and chit-chat. This is what she gets for making conversation. The possibility of being forced to talk to her mother.

Madalenia’s stress was minimal; the tension in her neck and shoulders had highly decreased which is exactly what she paid for. This was definitely her favorite place to be besides alone in bed with her husband. She wasn’t planning on leaving yet, there was still much more to do here, plus, who didn’t like being catered to? She removed the headband from her wrist and held her hair up into a neat ponytail. She had her cell phone in her robe pocket, sure most people left their cells in the locker provided but Madalenia had a strong committed relationship with her phone. Her phone was her life, plus, she was waiting to hear from both Anna and an important client. She took her cell phone out and browsed through her new text messages. She ignored the first two but replied to the one from her husband. She then looked up as she returned her cell to her pocket, she needed to ask when the next available spot was for a facial, so she headed towards the receptionist.
She saw a young woman trying to cover her face and frowned, she then saw who it was, which gave her a stern expression. She walked over with a hand on her hip, ”Well hello to you too”, she said casually. Madalenia noticed that Anna was completing her payment, she looked at the lady at the desk, ”Hello again… can you pencil me and this lovely young lady in for your next available facials?”, she smiled politely. The next two spots were open now which gave Madalenia appreciation, she turned to Anna, ”Come on, time for some pampering, my treat”. She looked over her daughter in judgment, she did need a facial, ”We can catch up,” she added happily, oblivious to Anna’s resentment. ”You can’t turn down a free facial, sweetie,” she said simply, she was not going to take no for an answer. Anna was her daughter dammit, she deserved some quality time, right?

Anna came to the spa to be pampered. She didn’t want stress, and she didn’t want conflict. But of course, this is what she would be given now. Every time that she saw her mother - heard her voice, saw a picture, whatever – a small coil started rolling in the pit of her stomach. It hollowed her out, it controlled her emotions, and it made her stressed. It put her on edge. And she didn’t know why things were like this for her – they shouldn’t be. She knew this. This was her mother. She would stop it if she could, end whatever feeling this was, but she couldn’t. Whatever she tried, she couldn’t. And as her mother made her way for the front desk, Anna sneaked a peak, and then looked around desperately for a possible way out. She didn’t see one, so she stood her ground, attempting to put on a welcoming, pleasant expression, no matter how difficult it seemed at the moment.
Shining her mother a smile, she debated on if she could take a hug. Deciding that the action would be awkward at best, Anna just continued to smile. ”Hello, mother,” Her tone was meant to be warm and at ease, but it deadpanned. It was lifeless, with a slight dread intermixed. Hearing her mom asking for the next appointment, Anna withheld a groan. All she wanted to do was skip through life without her parents… Why was this becoming so difficult? It shouldn’t be this way. ”I don’t know, mom…” she trailed off, and pulled out her phone to ‘check it’ (read: pretend to have plans). ”I really don’t have a lot of time today…” It was futile, she knew. Her attempts would fall flat. Anna could work her way out of anything, except when it came to her mother. She had more skill than Anna did, and always seemed to be able to see right through her facades, much to her dismay. ”But maybe… Maybe I can spare some time.”
